Course Description

Links type - set on cliffs above the picturesque village of Port Patrick. Views of North Channel, the Irish Coast, Mull of Kintyre and Isle of Man. Voted no.1 holiday course in South of Scotland by Golf World - always a test , even for the low handicap golfer, because of the wind factor. The very testing par 3 namely the 4th, 7th(the best) and the 11th. The outward half is the most difficult, shots can be made up on the most difficult, shots can be made up on the inward nine. The 13th is the most picturesque - downhill with a back drop of cliffs, hills and Sandell Bay.

I have been visiting this course every April for the last 10 years with the British Left Handed Golfing Association. Although it is not particularly long, with a couple of par fours that are drive-able, it is still a test for most handicapped golfers. I have always found the course in excellent condition and the hospitality in the clubhouse is always relaxed and very friendly. The third hole (Muckle Skelp) a par five, is a real test, with a blind second into a gully followed by a blind approach to the green. A real test particularly if the wind is against. The thirteenth is a stunning par four, from an elevated tee, where a well struck, well positioned drive will reach the green. Don't linger too long on the tee admiring the wonderful view. The 15th (Campbell's Gamble) is a par three of less than 100yds, but standing on the tee you can only see the top of the flag, and it is very easy to drop a shot here, so take care. The final hole is a cracking par five, with a narrow fairway in the landing zone, followed by a second that needs to be well placed to avoid a blind shot to the green. After your round, which I know you will enjoy, try a Dunskey Delight in the clubhouse, and try and spot the golf tag from your club from the hundreds and hundreds pined behind the bar.

The par three golf course is a must play whenever I am in Portpatrick. It is excellently done and is a challenge from the very first hole. The 3rd hole is a blind hole with bushes every 10 metres which catches the few stray ball. That hole is my favourite. Keep it up fellows.

Readers (Dinvin Course):

All par 3's , shortest is 87 yards and the longest 226 yards. This is a very tricky course set in an area of undulating land with rocky outcrops - an excellent test to 'sharpen up ' the short game. The greens are fairly small. Many a person hit their first shot on the course and return years later to play the Dunskey course.
