Course Description

Gullane Golf Club is situated in the rugged hilly country of East Lothian. A golfers skill and concentration will be tested at every turn. The greens and holes are situated on hillside, and the ever-changing wind direction should be addressed with every shot. This club also has 6 hole children's course.

I am an 8 handicap and play most of my golf on public courses in south Arkansas. I played Gullane #1 during the summer of 1997. Gullaine #1 is a very beautiful links style golf course. The second hole plays up a very large dune over to a breathtaking view of the sea. The remainder of the course is played between the sea and the dune until you play back up the dune on #17 and then to the clubhouse. The course is very well bunkered, but as severely as some we played. Good shots and rewarded and less than good ones are not. It was very windy and misty on this particular day, but we enjoyed the course very much. Great views of the sea and Murfield. There are some very challenging holes on this course. Do not be fooled by the easy 1st.

Played Gullane in late May'97 on a windswept clear day. This is a great golf course, particularly once you clear the hill after hole #2. You will find few in Scotland as enjoyable as this one. Can see Muirfield from the course.

Played here in early July as the second of two rounds in one day...and we paid for it! This course can be brutally hard if the wind is up. All the recent rains have made the rough incredibly high, over the knee in places. Views are spectacular as mentioned, with some nice peeks at Muirfiled in the distance. Bunkering was monir compared to some of it's cousins around Scotland, but you MUST stay on the fairway here or you are meat. #2 (Windygate) and #17 (Hilltop) were my favorite holes.

I am a 7 handicap player and played Gullane No.1 in an open tournament during the summer '98. It is a beautiful test of typical links golf and really made for a great days golf. The first hole is relatively easy but this should not lure you in to a false sense of security for the remaining holes are all very dangerous. The course includes some very beautiful views of the firth of forth and Muirfield.

I am a Gullane Golf Club member and have played here for approximately 20 years - and hence am probably a little biased. I thought the No.2 course requires a review for some our visitors who are looking for a challenging round of links golf in East Lothian. No.1 course is the better course, but just because No.2 is named so does not mean that it is that much less of a challenge, you just need to look at the Summer Meeting scores (1 round on No.1 and another on No.2) as evidence to that. It also represents great value for money for a round at the weekend which is significantly cheaper than No.1 and neighbouring course.

We played Gullane 1 in August of 1997. We had added it at the last minute, and even though we had told our wives that we would not play a fifth round while we were in Scotland, we did. my partner was a 7 at the time and I was an 8. His caddy's name was George, and George only saw Rich's swing on the first hole and from then on, George would hand Rich a club and tell him how hard or soft to hit the shot.

My caddy on the other hand, Robert, was more interested in getting mushrooms out of the rough, even if my shot did not go there! Anyway the golf course was a great challenge. There are many varied holes, 110 yard par 3, a 320 yard, par 4 and then some tough ones, 445 yard uphill par 4 which was fantastic. If you get a chance to play this one -do it! you'll love it, just ask for George for your caddy.

Played Gullane several times and always enjoyable. Both 1&2 are good courses but I preferred #2. Once you get over the uphill climb on the starting holes the walk is not too bad. Made the mistake the first time playing this as an afternoon round after playing Murfield that morning. Never did that again. A round here in the morning and an afternoon at North Berwick is a much better idea. This is a good course and if you can not get on Murfield certainly play this one. The 2 courses are located at the opposite end of the city of Gullane. Murfield does not have a pro shop but you can buy Murfield logo shirts, balls, etc. at the Gullane pro shop which is very nice and reasonable. Played the last time in August 1998 and it was not busy. Played in 3 hours.
