Course Description
By Curtis Dora (yod91@dial.pipex.com)
Originally a nine hole course dating from 1896 but extended to 18 in 1996.
Reader - Beith Golf Club is now an 18 hole course - with the additional 9 holes being opened in June 1996. The original 9 holes were founded in 1896.
The fact that there are 9 newer holes - leads to 2 distinctly different halves of golf. The original 9 holes remains unaltered - with the terrain being hilly & blind second shots to greens happening at 2 holes. There are no par-5's on the original 9 holes - with the longest hole on the front nine, measuring, barely 420 yards, however this lack of yardage is more than made up for in the normal prevailing weather conditions - with strong winds prevailing most of the time & the greens being particularly small & extremely undulating.
The new nine holes, are less hilly than the original nine & there are no blind second shots to greens - but the degree of difficulty remains unaltered - approach shots are to small greens - typically, guarded by green-side bunkers, with ditches running across some fairways.
With the addition of the new 9 holes - these being slightly longer than the original 9 holes - there is a par 5 on the new nine & the 18th hole is a 420 yard par-4, dogleg left to right, uphill, Beith Golf Club is a very challenging test of golf - a combination of the hilly terrain, small greens, prevailing wind conditions, all add up to a real test.
Whilst on paper, Beith is a relatively short course, it more than makes up for this lack of yardage, by it's degree of difficulty and is well worth a visit.
